Day Trips From Ketchikan: Beyond the Road System

Ketchikan sits on Revillagigedo Island and is not connected to Alaska's continental highway system. The Borough's own Roads page does not publish a total mileage figure for the local network. What is clear is that the pavement ends after a few miles in either direction.

That shapes the definition. A day trip from Ketchikan means a boat or a plane. Driveable stops like Totem Bight State Historical Park at milepost 10 are an outing, not a day trip. Everything past the road's end is a chartered or scheduled crossing.

Three candidate destinations come up again and again: Misty Fjords, Neets Bay, and the Prince of Wales and Metlakatla pair. A fourth, Hyder, appears in searches but belongs to a different conversation entirely.

Misty Fjords National Monument is the classic Ketchikan day trip. The US Forest Service describes it as 2,142,243 acres, the largest wilderness area on the Tongass, sitting roughly 22 to 40 miles east of town. It is reachable only by boat or floatplane via Behm Canal, and the official page states no entrance fee. Floatplane trips from Ketchikan run about 2 hours, such as #tour-1 at $389 with Taquan Air.

Neets Bay is the second genuine option. It is road-inaccessible on Behm Canal, roughly 30 to 35 air miles from Ketchikan, and home to a hatchery operated by SSRAA. SSRAA publishes no public-access permit process. Access is by seasonal chartered floatplane or boat tour, with black bear viewing in the peak window reported by secondary sources as roughly late July to early September.

Both are half-day trips, not full days. Book ahead, since access exists only through commercial operators holding US Forest Service special use permits to guide on Tongass lands.

These two come up in every day trip search, and honesty requires saying plainly: neither works as a day trip from a cruise ship call.

Prince of Wales Island is reached by the Alaska Marine Highway System, whose Ketchikan terminal is at the end of Walden Point Road. AMHS does not publish flat fares. Fares vary by route, season, passenger age and vehicle size, and must be looked up through the official Sailing Search fare tool. Interisland logistics on the island itself add driving time. Sailing durations and schedules are not stated in our sources for a same-day return.

Metlakatla on Annette Island is closer, but the same problem applies. Our source files do not state a same-day ferry schedule that supports a ship-call visit.

The practical frame for both is an overnight trip from Ketchikan, planned around published ferry sailings, not a few-hour excursion.

Hyder shows up in day trip searches because it is an Alaska town with famous bear viewing at its salmon creek. But Hyder sits at the far end of Southeast Alaska, near the British Columbia border, reached by road from Canada, not from Ketchikan.

There is no boat or floatplane day trip between Ketchikan and Hyder described in any of our sources, and no scheduled connection we can cite. The two towns are hundreds of miles apart by water. Treating Hyder as a Ketchikan day trip is simply an error that gets repeated.

If you are in port for a single day on a cruise, the true day trips are already marginal. Misty Fjords floatplane tours run 2 hours, such as #tour-1 from Taquan Air, and fit comfortably. Neets Bay bear viewing by charter runs longer and depends on season.

For most ship calls, the honest answer is that the best use of the day is in town or close by. Creek Street, the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, Saxman, and the totem parks all sit near the ship.
